Early 90's Timeline

-Snow Crash-
Snow Crash made the word avatar the proper term used to describe computer games and online characters. The novel talks about a fully interactive Metaverse, which is a 3-D virtual world that has out grown the internet. This novel also makes use of ancient Sumerian culture and fuses it with a technological society.

-EFF Moves to DC-
Electronic Frontier Foundation headquarters was located in San Francisco with staff members now located in Washington D.C. and Toronto. In 1993 The Big Dummy’s Guide to the Internet was published for free internet downloads. In the fall of 1993 the EFF moved its main office to Washington D.C.

-Hacker Crackdown-
Bruce Sterling released this book to expose the hacking subculture of the early 90’s. The booklet talks about big issues such as Operation Sundevil, Steven Jackson games, and Knight Lighting. Hacker Crackdown was published as freeware or better known as an electronic book.

-Mortal Kombat-
Mortal Kombat was the first highly anticipated controversial fighting game released in the early 90’s. This was the first fighting game to have a new fighting system. This game exhibited fatality moves, which were special finishing move that would show morbid decapitation of your opponent.

-Lawnmower Man-
This movie was about a doctor who increases intelligence through prescribed drugs and a virtual reality simulator. The doctor uses his lawn care provider named “Jobe” who is mentally handicapped as a patient. The doctor increases his intelligence but Jobe becomes so obsessed with the virtual simulator that he becomes part of it.

-Sneakers-
This movie is about a team of individuals who are trying to get a black box. They have to hack a phone line to obtain the information. The team members find out that the black box is a universal decryption device that can bypass the encryption of any computer. But the team finds out that the person that they thought they were working for was not the government.

-Dark Avengers Virus 1260-
Dark Avenger also known as Edie was a well-known hacker. He created the first polymorphic virus from the Vienna virus. When you open a file that needs to be read it triggers the virus. The virus attacks the hard drive and corrupts all existing files.

-Freejack-
This is a movie that deals with time travel technology. In the film Freejack bodies are snatched right before they are about to be killed. The bodies, also known as “Freejack’s” are empty human vessels that have not yet regained consciousness and are sold to the highest bidder.

-Mondo 2000-
Mondo 2000 was a magazine that talked about the history of technology rather than a users guide. This magazine closely resembles wired magazine. Some other topics that were covered in this magazine were virtual reality and smart drugs.

-Future Sex-
In this magazine it shows erotic photographs that commemorate the general trend of the technological revolution, featured articles, interviews, and reviews. This magazine is widely criticized because of its sex positive position for being so main–stream in cyber culture.

-Damien Doligez-
Damien is a French researcher who cracked a 40-bit RC4 encryption. RC4 encryptions are used to protect internet traffic. It took him 8 days and used 112 workstations to crack the encryption.

-Reboot-
Reboot was a television show that was completely computer animated. The story took place in a town called Mainframe. Other users have gone and made this an unending MMORPG.

-Phiber Optik (Mark Abene)-
Was a member of the “Legion of Doom” first and then was affiliated with “Master of Deception”. He was convicted to serve one year in prison due to unauthorized wiretaps and federal computer access. He was also in a book called Master of Deception- The Gang that Ruled Cyberspace.

-Vladimir Levin-
Vladimir used a laptop and hacked into Citibank’s wire transfer service. He was able to get 10 million dollars. He was later caught and extradited back to the US for sentencing. Citibank said that all was restored back to the bank except for $400,000 dollars.

-Cyberia-
The book talks about different ideas that deal with technology. Some of the topics that are covered are online cultures, and global brain concepts. This book can be downloaded on the internet for free.

-Aohell-
Aohell was created by “Da Chronic” to bomb pedophiles and crash their systems. This tool could generate fake accounts; create phishing tools, a punter, mail bomb, flooding script, artificial intelligence bot, and an IM manager. Once the program was loaded a short loop of Dr. Dre’s “Nuthin but a G Thang” would play.

-Hacker and the Ants-
The Hacker and the Ants is a weird novel that talks about a person named Jerzy Rugby, which is a computer programmer. Jerzy finds himself hacking away in the cyber world, and in the process finds out that he has been aiding a corporation by the name of GoMotion. Jerzy is on a quest to create intelligent robots.

-Data Trash-
This book talks about how technology has an affect on society. One chapter form the book talks about how society must adapt to new technology. And for the people who do not they will eventually fall behind and will therefore become uncompetitive.
